Book NowThe procedure, conducted on Tuesday, coincided with the commissioning of the machine procured by Government, signaling a strategic effort to modernize public hospital infrastructure and reduce reliance on ageing equipment that had long constrained complex cardiac interventions. The team observed a moment of quiet prayer before surgery, reflecting the gravity of the operation and its significance for patients and the medical fraternity alike.
Dr Simukayi Percy Machawira, Specialist Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, highlighted that while open-heart surgery itself is not new at Parirenyatwa, the arrival of the new bypass machine represents a critical leap in operational efficiency and patient safety. Equipped with six pumps, the S5 model is designed to reduce trauma to blood products and support continuous operations, addressing the intermittent disruptions experienced over nearly two decades due to ageing equipment.
“The lifespan is at least 10 to 15 years, and with refurbishment, it can last even longer,” Dr Machawira said. “This means we can now operate continuously without the start-stop interruptions that affected our procedures in the past. This is a game-changer for cardiac care in the public sector.”
Since resuming cardiac surgeries in 2023, the hospital has operated on 92 patients, and with the new machine, expectations are high for expanded surgical capacity. Dr Machawira indicated that upcoming cardiac camps could see up to ten patients operated on per week, a significant step in addressing the backlog of patients requiring complex interventions.
Government has, in recent months, accelerated the procurement of specialized medical equipment for public hospitals, including dialysis machines, CT scanners, and cardiac surgery devices. Analysts note that these measures not only improve healthcare outcomes but also enhance local capacity, reduce dependence on regional referrals, and signal the State’s commitment to delivering advanced, accessible medical services to all Zimbabweans.
For the surgical team, Tuesday’s operation represented years of perseverance paying off. For patients requiring complex cardiac care, it offers renewed hope that life-saving procedures can now be increasingly accessed locally, without the need to travel abroad.
This development underscores a broader strategic objective: modernizing Zimbabwe’s healthcare system in alignment with Vision 2030, while building institutional capacity that supports specialized medical care for the nation.
