Zimbabwe Launches Drive for Non-Permanent UNSC Seat, Backed by SADC and AU

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe has officially intensified its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term, aiming to reaffirm its role as a credible voice for peace, stability, and multilateralism on the global stage. The bid, first launched by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in August 2025 and highlighted at the UN General Assembly in September, has already attracted wide international support, including endorsements from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union, and over 80 countries beyond Africa.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Dr. Amon Murwira, said Zimbabwe’s campaign is rooted in its historical UNSC experience in 1983–1984 and 1991–1992, and its track record in peacekeeping, conflict resolution, and upholding the principles of sovereign equality and inclusivity. “Zimbabwe seeks this seat not for prestige, but to contribute meaningfully to the maintenance of global peace and security, and to ensure that Africa’s voice is heard in matters affecting the continent and the world,” Professor Murwira stated.

As elections loom in June, Zimbabwe plans a series of diplomatic engagements, including regional visits and strategic consultations with UN General Assembly members, to reinforce its credentials as a stable and constructive international partner. Analysts suggest that the campaign highlights Zimbabwe’s growing diplomatic clout, reflecting a country poised to translate regional leadership into global influence.
