Mazowe Walk Mall Anchors New Era of Growth in District

Mazowe, long associated with its agricultural surroundings and the Harare-Kanyemba Highway, is entering a new chapter of transformation. The recent completion of Mazowe Walk shopping mall is more than a commercial development—it is a marker of the district’s evolution into a modern economic hub, signalling broader trends of urbanisation, decentralisation, and rural industrialisation in Zimbabwe.

The mall’s presence has already changed the local economic landscape. Jobs were created during its two-year construction phase, and workers gained technical skills that enhance their employability. “I learnt new systems like operating a dumper and placing pavers, and I even managed to buy a stand in Chiweshe,” said one worker. Another noted how training in safety and technical work opened up new opportunities. These stories reflect how infrastructure projects are not just physical structures, but platforms for human capacity building.

For residents, Mazowe Walk offers convenience, modern shopping experiences, and a sense of pride in their community. “We are happy with developments happening in this region, especially this building. It’s big, state-of-the-art, and will create jobs while giving the area a facelift in line with Vision 2030,” said resident Lloyd Mukonyo. Such sentiments underscore how development is being felt directly by ordinary citizens, not just in macroeconomic indicators.

The project itself reflects the strength of public–private partnerships in driving local development. With land provided by the Mazowe Rural District Council, financing from Fidelity Asset Management, and construction managed by Gateway Construction, Mazowe Walk illustrates how collaboration across sectors can unlock value for communities. According to Gateway Construction’s Head of Marketing, Panashe Kakono, the success of the first phase is already setting the stage for the remaining phases, with tenants moving in.

At policy level, Mazowe Walk aligns with President Mnangagwa’s call for inclusive development that ensures “no place is left behind.” Alderman John Mudzonga, Chairperson of Mazowe RDC, stressed that the mall ensures local wealth remains within Mazowe, while elevating standards to match the district’s strategic proximity to Harare and the new city development.

Beyond the mall itself, Mazowe’s transformation is tied to the ongoing Mazowe Road Dualisation Project, which is set to increase traffic inflows and cement the town’s role as the gateway to Mashonaland Central Province. Together, these initiatives mark the district as a future growth pole, attracting investment, expanding markets, and integrating local economies into national and regional value chains.

Mazowe Walk is therefore not just a building. It is a symbol of transition—from quiet satellite district to active commercial hub, from informal growth to structured development, and from peripheral relevance to central participation in Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030. Its success will likely inspire similar developments across the country, proving that even in once-overlooked areas, modernisation is not a distant dream but an unfolding reality.
