Defining Stigma, Building Leaders: Honouring the Legacy of Ezekiel Jr.

By Aldridge Dzvene

Shamva, Zimbabwe – Archbishop Mai Guti, guest of honour at the Fundraising Corporate Open Day on 16 September 2025, delivered a deeply moving address that set the tone for the day’s celebrations. With candour and emotion, she shared the story of his son, highlighting both the challenges and triumphs that shaped his journey.

The Archbishop recounted a difficult and emotional moment during his son’s birth, describing it as a story that could easily have been seen as tragic. Yet, she reframed it as a narrative of hope, success, and empowerment. Through this experience, she said, his son was not only brought into the world but also nurtured in a way that gave him the mental strength, confidence, and determination to overcome challenges and achieve greatness.

“The story of my son is a reminder,” the Archbishop reflected, “that life’s most challenging moments can also be the most empowering. It teaches us resilience, courage, and the importance of nurturing potential. My son’s achievements today, his academic milestones, leadership, and creative accomplishments, stand as proof that with the right guidance, support, and belief, every child can thrive.”

The Archbishop’s heartfelt message resonated throughout the school grounds, reminding parents, educators, and stakeholders that every child is capable of greatness, regardless of the challenges they face. Her reflections emphasized that education must go beyond mere academics to include emotional, social, and holistic development, fostering a generation of resilient, confident, and empowered leaders.

This philosophy was reflected in the school’s approach to learning. Students, including those living with special needs, engage in innovative, multi-sensory lessons that cater to diverse abilities. Using tools like smartboards, students learn at their own pace, self-correcting and building confidence. Some learn kinesthetically, others visually or auditorily, ensuring that every child’s learning style is recognized and valued.

Peer learning and collaborative exercises further enhance the school’s environment. Older students tutor younger peers, fostering cooperation, empathy, and leadership while reducing social barriers and promoting inclusion. Therapy sessions are integral to the school’s model, with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy ensuring students develop mobility, communication skills, and independence, critical for holistic growth.

The marimba performances by children, including those living with special needs, were a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing talent and building confidence. Each note played and each rhythm struck highlighted the power of inclusion, creativity, and experiential learning, creating an environment where children are inspired to explore, grow, and excel.

Archbishop Mama Guti Junior’s reflections were not only personal but deeply symbolic for the school community. His son’s story served as a living example of overcoming adversity, embracing opportunity, and achieving excellence, reinforcing the school’s mission to develop well-rounded, resilient, and empowered learners.

For parents seeking a school that embraces diversity, fosters inclusion, and combines academic excellence with holistic development, Ezekiel Guti Junior Legacy School offers a model of education that is both progressive and deeply human-centered. Here, every child is encouraged to explore their potential, supported to overcome challenges, and celebrated for their achievements, ensuring that every story, like that of the Archbishop’s son, becomes a story of success, hope, and empowerment.
