In what authorities have described as one of the boldest assaults yet on the country’s drug underworld, the Zimbabwe Republic Police have dismantled notorious drug havens in Kwekwe, seizing more than 60 kilogrammes of marijuana, crystal meth and bronclear, and arresting 103 suspects linked to the rampant illicit trade. The massive raid, which follows clear directives from national leadership to wage war on drug and substance abuse, marks a decisive escalation in efforts to rid communities of dangerous narcotics destroying lives, particularly among the youth.
Of the suspects apprehended, ten are believed to be the key ringleaders responsible for coordinating supply networks across the Midlands Province. Perhaps most alarming for law enforcement is the growing sophistication in smuggling operations, with traffickers deploying increasingly concealed methods, stuffing drugs in cooking oil containers, nesting them in cardboard boxes, wrapping them multiple times in scented paper and masking the odour with strong perfumes, in a bid to evade detection. Superintendent Prince Magwizi, the Officer Commanding CID Kwekwe/Gokwe District, noted that while the dealers “are getting sneakier,” victory in the fight will depend largely on communities coming forward with intelligence, arguing that residents are well aware of who the peddlers are and where they operate.
Police commanders say the Kwekwe operation is only the beginning of a sweeping campaign across the Midlands. Assistant Commissioner Helena Mahonde, the Midlands Officer Commanding Crime and Operations, delivered a stern warning that the “time to act is now,” promising intensified raids that will make life “very hot” for drug barons. Her remarks underscore the determination to translate political commitment into visible action on the ground.
Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Owen Ncube, applauded the law enforcement team led by Officer Commanding Kwekwe District, Alson Chapeta, for a meticulous operation that successfully dismantled 53 drug bases across Amaveni, Mbizo, Redcliff and Torwood. The massive haul of seized contraband. now on public display, serves as a statement of intent that authorities are not only tracking down pushers but also uprooting the very bases from which their criminal enterprises have flourished.
As the crackdown gathered momentum, provincial stakeholders convened to synchronise strategies under the Midlands anti-drug taskforce, each assigned clear deliverables within their spheres of influence. With the political will at its peak, the police fully mobilised, and communities increasingly alert, the Midlands Province is positioning itself as a frontline in the nationwide battle against drugs. For many parents, teachers and health workers watching addiction tear through young lives, the Kwekwe blitz offers renewed hope that Zimbabwe is turning the tide, replacing fear with resolve and lawlessness with order.
