The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) has issued a firm statement distancing itself from retired Air Force officer, Group Captain Boncace Mwakorera, in a move aimed at preserving the integrity and apolitical stance of the country’s military establishment. The statement comes amid growing media references to Mwakorera as an active member of the force, which the ZDF has clarified is inaccurate and misleading.
According to the ZDF, Mwakorera officially retired from the Air Force of Zimbabwe in May 2021, and therefore any recent actions or public statements made by him should not be construed as reflective of the military’s position or involvement. The clarification reaffirms the ZDF’s institutional values of discipline, professionalism, and an unwavering focus on protecting national security and the sovereign interests of Zimbabwe.
The public distancing also serves to insulate the military from political or personal controversies involving former officers, reinforcing the long-held constitutional principle that the defence forces must remain neutral and above partisan fray. In a country where the military’s perceived involvement in political affairs has often sparked national and international debate, this explicit disassociation is significant in maintaining public trust.
By drawing a clear line between the institution and retired personnel, the ZDF is sending a message of accountability and adherence to military ethics, especially at a time when clarity of roles and respect for chain of command remain vital in safeguarding national cohesion.
As the country moves toward important national milestones—including elections, commemorations, and regional engagements—the ZDF’s statement is a strategic reaffirmation of its role as a disciplined, apolitical force focused solely on defending Zimbabwe’s sovereignty, stability, and constitutional order.
