VP Chiwenga Rallies Support for Youth Pilgrimage to Rome, Urges Investment in Youth Potential

Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has called on Zimbabweans to invest in the country’s youth, describing them as creative, passionate, and central to national progress. He was speaking at a fundraising event held in Harare last night to support young people participating in the upcoming Roman Catholic Church Jubilee Year of the Youth Pilgrimage in Rome, Italy.

“We gather not just to fundraise but to unleash the extraordinary power that lives within our youth,” said VP Chiwenga. “Their creativity and passion are vital for progress. Investing in our youth is, in fact, strengthening the very foundation of our society.”

Dr Chiwenga urged attendees to reflect on how acts of generosity can impact the lives of young people, reminding them of times when they, too, were uplifted by the kindness of others. He said this was an opportunity for well-wishers to positively shape the future by supporting youth development.

Emphasising the importance of decision-making during the formative years, the Vice President encouraged young people to be conscious of their choices, which ultimately shape their destinies and the nation’s future. He warned of the dangers posed by drug and substance abuse, crime, unemployment, and teenage pregnancies, which he said threaten to derail youth potential.

“Remember, substance abuse is not only a harmful phase; it affects your health, leads to a cycle of despair, and hinders your potential,” he said. “Engage in sports, arts, and meaningful friendships that inspire you to achieve great things.”

Dr Chiwenga praised the upcoming Jubilee pilgrimage as a transformative experience, urging the youths to see it as a journey of hope and growth. “As you go through the Door of Hope during the pilgrimage, remember, true strength lies in making rational choices, not succumbing to instant gratification. Let us all strive to do good and be exemplary.”

He also acknowledged the financial challenges faced by many young people who dream of making the pilgrimage to Rome, stressing the importance of collective support to help turn these dreams into reality.

“They dream of walking the same streets that have inspired millions before them, of standing in the presence of the Holy Father, and of connecting with fellow pilgrims from around the world. Without our collective support, these dreams may remain just that — dreams.”

The Jubilee Year, Dr Chiwenga said, is a chance for spiritual renewal, self-discovery, and strengthening bonds of love and unity. He urged the nation to come together to support the youth and ensure they have access to such life-changing opportunities.

The Vice President was accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga, senior government officials, and members of his family.
