President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday launched the Presidential Borehole Drilling Scheme and a housing initiative in Gwanda, Matebeleland South, marking a major step in addressing water shortages and improving housing access for local communities. The initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to enhance rural development and ensure sustainable livelihoods.
The borehole drilling scheme aims to provide clean water for communities, livestock, and agricultural irrigation, supporting food security and economic stability in the region. Meanwhile, the housing scheme will deliver affordable homes, particularly for war veterans and other local residents, in recognition of their contributions to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
Speaking at the launch, Cde Mahiya, a prominent war veteran, emphasized the sacrifices made by liberation fighters in securing Zimbabwe’s independence. “We did not waste our youth days for nothing,” he declared, underscoring the need to honor the efforts of those who fought for the country’s freedom. His remarks reflected a broader call for continued national development and respect for war veterans’ legacy.
President Mnangagwa’s commitment to these development projects signals a proactive approach to rural empowerment, aligning with the government’s vision for inclusive economic growth and improved living standards across Zimbabwe.
