Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has commended Hon. Dr. Kirsty Coventry for making history as the first African and first woman to be elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), calling it a proud moment for Zimbabwe, SADC, and the entire continent.
Speaking at a banquet held in her honor at State House on March 25, President Mnangagwa praised Coventry’s achievement as a testament to Africa’s growing influence in global sports leadership.
“Your election proves that Africa is ready to lead,” said the President, highlighting her rise from an Olympic gold medalist to an international sports leader.
Coventry, who served as Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture since 2018, has played a key role in transforming Zimbabwean sports. Under her leadership, the Gems (national netball team) qualified for two World Cups, the Warriors played in AFCON, and Zimbabwe’s rugby team won the African Championship. She also oversaw Zimbabwe’s hosting of major international cricket events, including the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers in 2023.
Beyond competitive success, she spearheaded sports infrastructure projects in disadvantaged communities, ensuring access to modern multi-purpose sporting facilities in areas such as Chiredzi, Gutu, Lupane, and Zvimba.
As she prepares to assume leadership at the IOC, Coventry is expected to advocate for youth empowerment, sports integrity, and the inclusion of developing nations in global competitions.
President Mnangagwa reaffirmed Zimbabwe’s unwavering support for her new role, stating: “Your success is our success. The whole nation stands behind you.”
With a legacy of resilience, excellence, and leadership, Coventry’s new position places Zimbabwe on the world stage once again, reinforcing the country’s presence in international sports governance.
