Despite a challenging start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Zimbabwe head coach Michael Nees remains optimistic that his team can still secure a spot in the tournament. With no wins so far and sitting at the bottom of Group C with just three points from five matches, the Warriors face an uphill battle—but Nees isn’t giving up hope.
Currently, South Africa leads the group with 10 points, while Zimbabwe prepares for a crucial match against Nigeria, the three-time African champions, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.
Nees continues to inspire confidence in his squad, emphasizing that the team has the potential to turn things around. “There’s always national pride when you play for your country, and you must always give your best,” he said. “We still have 15 points to play for, and as long as the games are still to be played, we are determined to keep fighting.”
The coach also reminded his players and the fans that it’s important to give their best in every match, regardless of the current standings. “Even if a team is mathematically out of the race, they still have a responsibility to compete with all their might,” Nees added. “We believe in our chance, and as long as we have a shot, we will continue to give everything.”
With the World Cup dream still alive, Nees and the Warriors are focused on securing a positive result against Nigeria and continuing to build momentum in their quest for qualification.
