Botswana Reaffirms Strong Ties with Zimbabwe, Eyes Deeper Cooperation

Botswana remains committed to strengthening its long-standing relationship with Zimbabwe, with its Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale, reaffirming the high value his country places on bilateral ties.

Dr. Butale, who is in Zimbabwe for the SADC Council of Ministers meeting, held discussions with Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, at Munhumutapa offices yesterday. He emphasized Botswana’s dedication to enhancing cooperation between the two nations under the new government in Gaborone.

“As Botswana, we deeply appreciate our strong ties with Zimbabwe. Our engagement today reaffirmed our commitment to bolstering our already excellent relations and exploring new ways to strengthen our partnership,” said Dr. Butale.

Focus on Trade and Industrialization

The two ministers acknowledged significant opportunities for collaboration, particularly in trade and industrialization. Dr. Butale highlighted a shared vision between the two countries to accelerate economic growth and transformation.

“There is tremendous potential for us to work together in advancing rapid industrialization. Strengthening trade relations will play a crucial role in achieving this,” he noted.

Strengthening People-to-People and Business Relations

Beyond government-to-government cooperation, Dr. Butale emphasized the close historical and cultural ties between the people of Botswana and Zimbabwe, which he sees as a strong foundation for deeper business engagements.

“Our citizens have long shared a deep connection, and we believe that moving towards stronger business-to-business diplomacy will enhance trade and economic collaboration,” he added.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both countries looking forward to expanding their partnership in ways that will bring mutual economic benefits.
