ZRP Clarifies Alleged Abduction of Vongai Nadia Mabvirakure, Confirms Theft Investigation

Vongai Nadia Mabvirakure

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed social media claims regarding the alleged abduction or disappearance of Vongai Nadia Mabvirakure, stating that she is a suspect in a theft case and is currently under police guard in hospital.

According to ZRP, Mabvirakure is under investigation for allegedly contravening Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23, which pertains to “Theft of Trust Property.” The case was reported by Tichabaiwa Gwadu, representing Matiza Foundation, following a financial dispute over a business partnership.

Police reports indicate that in September 2024, Mabvirakure, through her company Green Rebirth Trust, entered into an agreement with Matiza Foundation to construct a greenhouse or shed net at Chomupunga Business Centre in Murewa. She was given USD 15,200 in cash to acquire the necessary materials based on her quotation. However, instead of making direct payments to Brickforce Hardware in Murewa as agreed, she allegedly diverted the funds for personal use and procured the building materials on credit under false pretenses using Matiza Foundation’s name.

Brickforce Hardware later contacted Matiza Foundation, demanding payment, which led to the matter being reported to the police. On March 5, 2025, CID Murewa officers attempted to locate Mabvirakure at her known residence in Chitungwiza, but she was not found. Her son, Patrick Mabvirakure, informed officers that she was away at the time.

Police have since located the suspect, who is now in hospital under police guard. While investigations into the theft case are ongoing, ZRP has also indicated that they are looking into allegations raised by her family regarding her circumstances.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) to the Commissioner General of Police, urged the public to rely on verified information, warning against misleading social media speculation.
