In a landmark development, the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law the long awaited Land expropriation bill.
The Land expropriation bill is set to allow the government to take over land in appropriate cases, for the public interest and will enable land reform and redress of colonial imbalances. The law replaces the Expropriation Act of 1975 and is set to bring equitable access to resources for all South Africans. Land reform has been a topical issue in South Africa and the African region.
Zimbabwe dealt decisively with the land question in 2000 channeling the resource to the indigenous people. The agrarian revolution has since seen harvests surpass the colonial era and post independence era when the land was in the hands of the whites.
The inequalities brought about by the colonial regimes had ensured the black majority had no equal access to their resources.
With this piece of legislation, significant changes to that set up are expected in the neighbouring country.
