ZANU PF Mobilizes for Referendum

ZANU PF is preparing to amend the Constitution to allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030, with plans to mobilize its members for a resounding referendum victory.

During a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West, Justice, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi expressed confidence in the party’s ability to secure support for the amendment, citing significant growth in membership as a key advantage.

Mashonaland West Province, which boasts over 600,000 registered ZANU PF members across six political districts, has positioned itself strongly for the anticipated referendum. The province’s population, recorded at approximately 1.8 million in the 2022 national census, includes around 700,000 people on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission voters’ roll as of 2023. Although the referendum process does not rely on the voters’ roll, ZANU PF is leveraging its growing grassroots base, particularly first-time voters in areas such as Hurungwe, Zvimba, and Makonde, to consolidate its influence.

Cde Ziyambi highlighted the party’s readiness to push for the constitutional amendment, emphasizing that the initiative was driven by resolutions from grassroots members. He stated that the party’s current membership figures provided an advantage in securing widespread support. This sentiment was echoed by other provincial leaders, including ZANU PF provincial chairman Cde Mary Mliswa Chikoka, who assured attendees that the province is united in its support for extending President Mnangagwa’s term to fulfill his Vision 2030 agenda.

The meeting also touched on President Mnangagwa’s commitment to key development goals, including the issuance of title deeds to landowners, a move seen as part of his broader vision to empower Zimbabweans and solidify property ownership rights. Additionally, discussions on increased tobacco and wheat production and growing investor interest in manufacturing were presented as evidence of the province’s progress under his leadership.

With grassroots mobilization intensifying and resolutions from party members reinforcing the push for constitutional amendments, ZANU PF leaders expressed optimism that the referendum would further cement President Mnangagwa’s leadership and enable the realization of the Vision 2030 agenda.
