Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has expressed readiness to implement constitutional amendments extending President Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028, following resolutions made at Zanu PF’s Annual National People’s Conference. The Minister emphasized that the amendments would align with the people’s wishes and uphold Zimbabwe’s democratic principles.
Speaking on the matter, Minister Ziyambi noted that while President Mnangagwa has signaled his intent to abide by the Constitution and step down at the end of his term, public sentiment has shown strong support for his continued leadership. He added, “Zimbabwe is a democracy guided by the will of the people. If they say they want the President’s term extended, so be it. The necessary legal frameworks can be enacted when the time is right.”
The proposal for the extension stems from a resolution by Zanu PF during its 2023 conference in Bulawayo, citing the need for President Mnangagwa to oversee the completion of key developmental projects initiated during his tenure.
In a surprising development, the main opposition party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), through its Parliamentary leader Mr. Sengezo Tshabangu, also expressed support for the extension. During a tour of the First Family’s Pricabe Farm, Tshabangu praised President Mnangagwa’s leadership and emphasized the importance of unity in advancing Zimbabwe’s interests.
Across the political and societal spectrum, there has been significant support for extending President Mnangagwa’s term, highlighting his perceived ability to deliver development and foster unity. However, the ultimate decision will depend on the formal processes and public endorsement to amend the Constitution.
