The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has sounded the alarm over the alarming rise in fatalities during the festive season, with new road traffic statistics revealing a worrying trend.
While the overall number of accidents dropped by 16.7% from 1,454 in 2023 to 1,211 in 2024, the fatality rate saw a disturbing increase, jumping from 71 deaths in 2023 to 77 in 2024 – a rise of 8.5%. This indicates that the accidents occurring during this period are becoming more severe, with deadlier consequences.

Book NowThe period from 15th December to 26th December 2024 witnessed 65 fatal accidents, compared to 50 in the same period in 2023. This sharp uptick has left authorities grappling with the deadly implications of road behavior and festive-season pressure. During particularly high-risk days such as 22nd and 25th December, there were significant spikes in fatalities, with 7 people killed on 22nd December and 13 on Christmas Day.
These increases in deadly crashes raise alarms over driver behavior and the sheer volume of traffic on the roads.
Private vehicles have been identified as the main contributors to these fatal accidents. Experts point to factors like speeding, fatigue, and recklessness during long journeys as key drivers behind the carnage.
As Zimbabweans traveled for holiday festivities, many seemed to take risks, resulting in accidents that claimed lives and caused injuries. The festive rush may be contributing to people pushing the limits of safety, often at the cost of human lives.
Pedestrian deaths also remain a significant concern. Several fatal accidents occurred as pedestrians attempted to cross busy roads, underscoring the vulnerability of those on foot and the need for heightened awareness among both drivers and pedestrians. Particularly in residential and high-traffic areas, these incidents are likely to rise without greater caution from all parties involved.
While the total number of accidents dropped, the 2024 statistics highlight a troubling trend of more serious accidents leading to fatalities. With a total of 401 injuries recorded during the period, the ZRP is urging the public to be extra vigilant and responsible, particularly as they continue to navigate the country’s roads during the busy festive period.
The Police also emphasized the need for both motorists and pedestrians to take ownership of their safety, warning of severe consequences for those who flout road safety rules.
The ZRP has committed to continued enforcement of road safety measures and called for a collective effort to reduce the fatalities, urging all road users to remain responsible, alert, and patient.
The challenge, however, remains significant, as the festive season continues to take its toll on the country’s roads.
