Seed Co and ZRP Unite to Combat Fake Seeds, Safeguarding Zimbabwe’s Food Security

In a strong effort to protect Zimbabwe’s food security, Seed Co and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have intensified their campaign against the growing problem of fake seeds being sold across the country.

This alarming issue threatens not only the country’s agricultural productivity but also undermines national food security, putting the livelihoods of farmers and the economy at risk.

The press conference, held at Seed Co’s headquarters, emphasized the critical importance of certified, high-quality seeds in ensuring successful crop yields. Fake seeds, often sold at a lower price, may appear to be a bargain, but they come with serious consequences. These counterfeit products fail to meet the quality standards necessary for strong, resilient crops, and their use results in poor harvests, reduced food production, and, ultimately, a negative impact on the national food supply. In a country where agriculture is central to both the economy and the well-being of its people, the proliferation of fake seeds threatens to destabilize food security at every level.

Seed Co has long been a leader in providing quality seeds, investing millions into research and development to create drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and high-yielding varieties that are suited to Zimbabwe’s diverse agro-ecological regions. As the 2024/2025 growing season approaches, the company remains committed to supplying certified seeds that are essential for boosting national agricultural output.

These varieties, including maize, wheat, barley, and small grains, are carefully selected for their resilience and yield potential.

To combat the sale of fake seeds, Seed Co is working closely with ZRP, recognizing that counterfeit seeds are not only a challenge for farmers but also a violation of the law. The growing sophistication of fraudsters who replicate Seed Co’s packaging and sell substandard products has led to significant financial losses for farmers and a decline in crop production. As counterfeit seeds spread, they jeopardize Zimbabwe’s ability to produce enough food for its population, and a lack of reliable seed supply further exacerbates the country’s vulnerability to food insecurity.

Through their collaboration, Seed Co and ZRP have made notable strides in reducing the prevalence of fake seeds. The number of reported cases and the amount of counterfeit seeds recovered has steadily decreased, with a significant reduction in recent years. Seed Co is dedicated to continuing this partnership, with the aim of eradicating counterfeit products from the market and restoring confidence in Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.

As part of their ongoing efforts, Seed Co also stressed the importance of educating farmers about the risks of counterfeit seeds and the significance of purchasing only from reputable distributors. To further safeguard the integrity of the seed supply chain, Seed Co encourages farmers to report any suspected fake seed sellers to the authorities, ensuring that the law is upheld and that farmers are not deceived by fraudulent products.

The impact of counterfeit seeds goes beyond just the immediate loss of crops; it ripples through the economy, impacting food security for the entire nation. By continuing to work together, Seed Co and ZRP aim to protect the integrity of Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, ensuring that farmers have access to the high-quality seeds they need to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for the country.
