Prominent businessman and Politburo member Sanete James Makamba has openly voiced the need for international intervention to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe. His statement reflects the sentiment of millions of Zimbabweans who feel the weight of economic restrictions that have impacted the country’s growth and stability for years.
He emphasized that sanctions have not only slowed Zimbabwe’s economic progress but have also inflicted hardship on everyday life of citizens. In a recent address, he noted, “Sanctions have been implemented against Zimbabwe, causing suffering among innocent citizens. It is illogical to attribute the country’s struggles to its leadership alone when external entities are responsible for imposing these economic restrictions.
The call is clear that international community, especially those imposing sanctions, should heed the voices of influential leaders worldwide who advocate for Zimbabwe’s integration into global trade and finance. Many African heads of state, committees, and influential global figures have visited Zimbabwe, echoing the call for the lifting of sanctions. Their support underscores a belief in Zimbabwe’s potential to emerge as a competitive player in the global economy if given a fair chance.
Senator James Makamba passionately urged, “Open up the airway ,the border and trading routes. Open up the financial sector so that Zimbabwe can rightfully compete with the rest of the globally.
Zimbabwe’s challenges, compounded by sanctions, have been felt in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, limiting the country’s ability to reach its full potential. Mr Makamba, as voiced by other Zimbabwean leaders, argues that lifting sanctions is essential to alleviating these challenges and creating opportunities for growth, self-sufficiency and sustainable development.
The businessman’s words add to a growing consensus among Zimbabweans and their allies that sanctions are counterproductive. His call aligns with a broader movement across the African continent and beyond, advocating for economic justice and fair competition in a globalized world.
