In a momentous occasion at Boka Auction Floors, Vice President Hon. K.C.D. Mohadi officiated the launch of additional NetOne 5G base stations, marking yet another significant step in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation journey. This development comes as part of the government’s broader effort to advance technological infrastructure in line with Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

Speaking at the event, Vice President Mohadi emphasized how the expansion of 5G technology plays a critical role in positioning Zimbabwe as a knowledge-driven economy. He highlighted that the new base stations are not just about faster internet speeds but are part of a larger vision to integrate cutting-edge technology into key sectors such as agriculture, education, health, and industry. With these advancements, Zimbabweans across the country will have better access to vital services and resources, further bridging the digital divide.

NetOne’s efforts in rolling out 5G services are commendable, as they continue to bolster the nation’s communications infrastructure. This expansion is expected to fuel innovation, increase productivity, and facilitate Zimbabwe’s competitiveness on the global stage. By embracing 5G, businesses, entrepreneurs, and innovators can tap into new opportunities, while industries will benefit from enhanced efficiency and smarter operations.
Beyond 5G network expansion, NetOne is showcasing several groundbreaking technologies aimed at enhancing everyday life. In collaboration with Hikvision and Satewave Technologies, they introduced Smart Surveillance and Smart Security solutions for homes and businesses. These systems are designed to provide advanced protection, reflecting NetOne’s commitment to integrating modern technology into security solutions that enhance safety across Zimbabwe.

In addition, NetOne launched a Smart Hybrid Power Solution, which offers a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional power systems. This solution, powered by an AI engine, ensures real-time power optimization and provides extended autonomy, a critical improvement for base stations often affected by power cuts and vandalism. This innovative power system is expected to enhance service reliability while contributing to the network’s resilience.
NetOne has also made significant strides in healthcare through Telemedicine, partnering with ZimSmart Villages to deploy virtual hospitals in areas such as the Midlands, Mashonaland, and Harare. Initially operating on e-Band Microwave Technology, these virtual health facilities will now be supported by the robust 5G network, enabling faster, more reliable medical services, especially in rural and underserved communities. This move promises a transformative impact on Zimbabwe’s healthcare landscape by providing easier access to critical services.
As part of their ongoing efforts to enhance network infrastructure, NetOne also celebrated the launch of key projects, including 275 LTE base stations and 219 base stations under the National Mobile Broadband Phase 3 project. Furthering their commitment to sustainability, 130 base stations have transitioned to solar power, significantly improving energy efficiency. Meanwhile, the deployment of 20 additional 5G base stations has already demonstrated speeds of up to 1.1Gbps, offering users a glimpse of the high-speed connectivity they can expect as the rollout continues.
Vice President Mohadi acknowledged the collaborative efforts behind these developments, thanking POTRAZ and international partners like Huawei, whose technical and financial support has been instrumental in Zimbabwe’s technological advancements. He also praised the Tower Relocation Program, which has successfully extended network coverage to rural areas, furthering the government’s mission to leave no community behind in Zimbabwe’s digital future.
The Vice President concluded by emphasizing the importance of preparing Zimbabwe’s youth for the digital economy, citing the government’s Heritage-Based Education 5.0 initiative as a key driver in equipping future generations with the necessary skills to lead in a tech-driven world. He urged all telecommunications stakeholders to continue their collaborative efforts, ensuring that Zimbabwe becomes a leader in digital transformation, competitiveness, and inclusivity.
As Zimbabwe continues its journey toward a fully connected, modernized society, NetOne’s 5G expansion and innovative solutions are set to play a pivotal role in empowering citizens, driving economic growth, and enhancing everyday life. With a clear commitment to progress and inclusivity, Zimbabwe is poised to become a dynamic player on the global digital stage.
