Zimbabwe’s participation in the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF II), held from September 1 to 3, 2024, in Bali, Indonesia, highlighted its pursuit of deeper bilateral ties with Indonesia, particularly in health and mining. Led by Vice President Hon. Col. (Rtd) K.C.D. Mohadi, Zimbabwe positioned itself to capitalize on new synergies with Indonesia, aligning with Africa’s broader Agenda 2063, a long-term framework for continental development.
The forum, which focused on critical pillars such as economic transformation, mining, health, and food security, provided Zimbabwe with a platform to advance its national priorities. A significant achievement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Health Cooperation between Zimbabwe and Indonesia. This agreement is poised to enhance Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, specifically in secondary and tertiary care, and to strengthen its resilience in managing global pandemics through improved surveillance systems. Zimbabwe stands to benefit from Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry, as both nations look to deepen cooperation in health technologies and healthcare delivery, which will boost the country’s capacity to tackle future health crises.
In his address, Vice President Mohadi stressed the importance of African countries, including Zimbabwe, building capacity to handle pandemics and improving healthcare delivery. This collaboration with Indonesia marks a key milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to modernize its healthcare infrastructure, which aligns with its Vision 2030 goal of achieving upper-middle-income status.
On the economic front, Zimbabwe’s vast mineral resources were another focal point of discussions. The Vice President extended an invitation to Indonesian investors, encouraging them to invest in value addition and sustainable extraction in Zimbabwe’s mining sector. The potential for greater collaboration in this area is substantial, given the interest from Indonesia to establish a Memorandum of Understanding on mining cooperation, as well as a Preferential Trade Agreement and a Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement. These agreements are expected to enhance trade and economic interactions between the two nations, further strengthening Zimbabwe’s mining industry and unlocking economic opportunities.
The 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum underscored Zimbabwe’s commitment to international cooperation, particularly with strategic partners like Indonesia. Through strengthened partnerships in health, mining, and broader economic cooperation, Zimbabwe is positioning itself for sustainable growth while contributing to the realization of Africa’s Agenda 2063.
