Harare City Council’s Land Looting Scandal: A Betrayal of Public Trust

The Harare City Council (HCC), under the leadership of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has come under fire for allegedly engaging in a scandalous land looting scheme. Councillors are accused of distributing land among themselves for personal gain, a revelation that surfaced during an ongoing inquiry by the Commission of Inquiry into the governance issues of the HCC.

Instead of focusing on essential services like clean water, sanitation, and waste management, the HCC has reportedly chosen to exploit its position for personal enrichment. The allocation of residential stands to councillors is seen as a blatant disregard for the public’s trust. This act is a clear indication that the council’s priorities are misaligned, as they favor personal benefits over the needs of the community. Such an abuse of power highlights the council’s failure to provide good governance and fulfill its responsibilities to ratepayers.

The gross mismanagement and corruption within the HCC have led to the denial of vital services to residents, many of whom are already struggling. This dereliction of duty is viewed as a significant betrayal of public trust. Instead of serving the public good, those in power seem to prioritize their own interests. This self-serving behavior is not only unacceptable but also deeply insulting to the citizens who elected them with the expectation of good governance.

The consequences of this land looting scheme are far-reaching. Long-standing residents face displacement, community spaces are being destroyed, and Harare’s housing crisis is worsening. The actions of the HCC are not only unethical but also harmful to the well-being of the city and its people.

Immediate action is demanded from the HCC to address these allegations. It is crucial that land allocation processes are transparent, fair, and serve the public’s best interests. Councillors involved in misconduct must be held accountable and face appropriate consequences.

The residents of Harare deserve better. They deserve a council that prioritizes their needs, delivers good governance, and serves with integrity. The land looting scandal should serve as a wake-up call for residents to demand more from their elected officials and for the council to refocus on its true mandate: serving the public.
