Zimbabwe 100% Ready to Host SADC Summit

Zimbabwe is poised and fully prepared to host the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State Summit, scheduled for 17 to 18 August 2024 at the New Parliament Building in Mt Hampden. The summit, which will bring together 16 Heads of State and Government from across the region, will be held under the theme, “Promoting innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards an industrialised SADC.” Preliminary proceedings began with the Council of Ministers convening today, laying the groundwork for the main event.

Zimbabwe has left no stone unturned in its preparations, ensuring that all critical components for the successful hosting of the summit are in place. Accreditation is currently underway, and the nation has bolstered its infrastructure and essential services to accommodate the distinguished guests. Key highlights of the preparation include guaranteed power supply, water-tight security measures, and a welcoming environment designed to reflect the country’s signature warmth and hospitality.

The Summit is set against the backdrop of the country’s commemorations of Heroes Day, adding a layer of historical significance to the gathering. As Zimbabwe honours its heroes and heroines who fought for independence, the nation also acknowledges the support it received from SADC member states, particularly the Frontline States, which provided crucial refuge, training, and resources during the liberation struggle.

In anticipation of the Summit, Zimbabwe has undergone significant infrastructural enhancements. The completion of the VVIP section at the airport, the refurbishment of key roads, thoroughfares, and traffic lights, as well as the construction of Presidential villas, have all contributed to ensuring a comfortable and secure stay for the visiting dignitaries. These developments have been met with widespread approval among Zimbabweans, who view the Summit as both a diplomatic milestone and a catalyst for local infrastructure development.

The SADC Troika Organ Summit, which will take place on 16 August 2024, will precede the main Summit. This critical meeting will address peace and security issues within the region, setting the stage for the broader discussions on economic growth, innovation, and industrialization that will dominate the main Summit’s agenda.

As the nation welcomes its esteemed guests, Zimbabwe stands ready to not only host a successful SADC Summit but also to showcase its capabilities as a nation committed to regional cooperation, innovation, and sustained economic growth. The successful execution of this event is expected to leave a lasting legacy, both in terms of regional integration and the tangible infrastructural improvements that will benefit the country long after the Summit concludes.
