Deputy Minister Gata highlighted that sports embody essential values such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and fair play. She pointed to the success of Zimbabwean athletes like Marvellous Nakamba, Bill Antonio, Tawanda Chirewa, and Khama Billiat, who have turned their passion for sports into successful careers, inspiring young Zimbabweans to follow in their footsteps. According to the Minister, these athletes are not just symbols of individual achievement but also represent the broader potential of sports to shape lives and communities positively.
The Deputy Minister underscored the crucial role sports play in the well-being of the people, contributing to physical fitness, mental sharpness, and stress relief. She connected this to the Heritage-Based Curriculum, where Physical Education, Sport, and Mass Displays are integral, showcasing Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage through traditional dances, competitions, and exhibitions. She emphasized that sports are not merely extracurricular activities but are vital components of holistic education, essential for nurturing well-rounded individuals.
Beyond physical and mental health, Minister Gata stressed that sports have the unique ability to unite people from different backgrounds and socio-economic statuses. She called on the nation to appreciate the value of sports and to encourage young learners to participate actively. By promoting sports in schools, she argued, Zimbabwe could combat drug and substance abuse, improve academic performance, and open up future opportunities for students through skill development and potential career paths.
Reflecting on the recent NAPH competitions, Deputy Minister Gata noted the display of patriotism, dedication, and resilience by the participating students. She urged the community to support and encourage school pupils’ involvement in sports, which she described as not only a source of national pride but also a platform for personal growth and career development.
