Good News for Zimbabwe: The Country Wins Fight Against Cholera

Zimbabwe, which has been grappling with a cholera outbreak since February 2023, has now been declared cholera-free. Minister of Health and Child Care, Honourable Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, announced to the Cabinet on July 30, 2024, that the country has reported zero cholera cases in the past 30 days, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the disease.Minister Mombeshora emphasized that while Zimbabwe is now free from cholera, the public must continue to observe strict hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent any future outbreaks. The cholera outbreak began in Chegutu town, Mashonaland West Province, on February 12, 2023, and rapidly spread across all ten provinces, affecting 45 out of 62 districts. By December 3, 2023, there were 10,263 suspected cases, 1,409 confirmed cases, and 230 deaths. These numbers rose to 13,176 suspected cases and 1,543 confirmed cases by December 27, 2023.In response to the outbreak, the government implemented several measures, including restrictions on gatherings, limiting funeral attendees to 50 people, and advising against physical contact and social events. A state of emergency was declared in Harare on November 17, 2023. The World Health Organization (WHO) supported the response by upgrading and expanding cholera treatment centers to bolster the country’s efforts. The announcement of a cholera-free status for the past month brings immense relief to Zimbabweans, many of whom have lost loved ones to the disease. This milestone allows citizens to move about the country with renewed freedom and confidence, no longer burdened by the fear of cholera.A cholera-free Zimbabwe presents numerous benefits, including improved public health, reduced morbidity and mortality, enhanced economic growth, and decreased healthcare costs. It also increases food security, reduces the risk of disease transmission through contaminated food and water, and alleviates the financial burden on affected households. Moreover, it enhances the well-being, dignity, and quality of life of Zimbabweans and could attract more tourists, investors, and businesses to the country. The achievement demonstrates effective governance, leadership, and commitment to public health. As Zimbabweans celebrate this victory, it is essential to acknowledge the tireless efforts of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government in managing the outbreak. The administration’s proactive interventions have been crucial in achieving this milestone, ensuring that Zimbabwe is no longer grappling with the devastating effects of cholera.
