Zim Tourism Booms with 34% Rise in Arrivals in 2023

Africa’s tourism industry is on the rise, and Zimbabwe is at the forefront, having achieved a remarkable 34 percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2023. With its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Zimbabwe is poised to become a premier tourist destination both regionally and globally. The National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, launched by President Mnangagwa in 2020, has been instrumental in driving this growth. Zimbabwe’s burgeoning gastronomy revolution, coupled with strategic efforts to unlock the country’s full potential, will be crucial in competing with established destinations worldwide.

Tourism has emerged as a vital sector in Zimbabwe’s economy, ranking as the third largest contributor to the country’s National Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The industry has shown remarkable growth, with a significant 34 percent surge in tourism arrivals last year, making it a key driver of economic expansion.

The promotion of innovative products like Gastronomy Tourism, alongside initiatives such as Brand Africa and Buy Zimbabwe, is poised to significantly enhance Africa’s appeal and competitiveness as a premier tourist destination on the global stage. By showcasing its rich culinary heritage and cultural diversity, Africa can differentiate itself from other destinations and attract a new wave of tourists.

The Gastronomy Tourism initiative aims to promote a unified African identity and celebrate the continent’s unique strengths, further enhancing its global appeal. As Africa continues to develop its tourism industry, this initiative will play a crucial role in unlocking the continent’s full potential and competing with established destinations worldwide.

The surge in tourism receipts in Zimbabwe is a testament to the effectiveness of the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, launched by President Mnangagwa in 2020. This strategy has brought significant growth and recognition to the area, solidifying its position as a leading tourist destination.
