
Retired Brigadier General Dr. Michael Chaminuka, a distinguished veteran of the Liberation Struggle and decorated senior officer in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, was laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre on Monday July 22, 2024.
Dr. Chaminuka, known by his Chimurenga name ‘Cde Pekupai Hondo,’ passed away in Harare on July 13, 2024, at the age of 62 after a short illness.
He was celebrated for his dedication, patriotism, and significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s independence and the military. Born on January 2, 1962, in Hurungwe District, Mashonaland West Province, Chaminuka left secondary school in 1977 to join the Liberation Struggle in Mozambique.
He underwent military and medical training, eventually playing a critical role in ensuring the safety of medical supplies for liberation fighters. After independence in 1980, he joined the Zimbabwe National Army, where he held various key positions, including Director of Military Intelligence and Director of Business Development at the Zimbabwe National Defence University.
Throughout his career, Chaminuka earned numerous accolades and medals for his exemplary service. He was also a respected academic, holding a Doctorate in Philosophy (Ethics) from the University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.
In his tribute, President Mnangagwa highlighted Chaminuka’s unwavering dedication to Zimbabwe and urged the nation to honor the legacy of all liberation war heroes.
The President also extended condolences to the family of the late Rtd. Brigadier General Lameck Mutanda, another national hero who was posthumously honored.
As Zimbabwe prepares to host the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, the President called for unity and collective effort to ensure a successful event, reflecting the nation’s commitment to progress and development.
Dr. Michael Chaminuka is remembered for his invaluable contributions to Zimbabwe’s liberation and his dedicated service in the Defence Forces. His legacy of patriotism and commitment continues to inspire the nation.
