Football Community Mourns Norman Maroto

The football community is mourning the loss of former Zimbabwe Warriors and Dynamos striker, Norman “Lumumba” Maroto. He passed away early this morning at a local hospital after a short illness, shocking everyone.

Maroto died at 40, an age where he was still active in the sport he loved. He passed away early Friday at Avenues Clinic in Harare after being admitted and put on life support. A family representative said he had complained of flu on Thursday afternoon and died this morning.

He started feeling sick yesterday afternoon and was taken to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away around 1 AM today. People are gathering at 2360 Tynwald South, Harare, to mourn.

The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ), where Maroto worked with Desmond Maringwa and other former stars, confirmed his passing. Maroto was the Communications Manager at FUZ.

Fans, friends, and family have all expressed their shock and sadness. The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) posted a condolence message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we extend our sincere condolences on the passing of Norman Maroto, a cherished member of the Zimbabwe football family. Norman’s contribution to Zimbabwean football was immense and profound.”

ZANU PF Patriots also mourned him, praising his presence on social media. They said, “Norman Maroto was a whole vibe on Twitter. Rest strong. We will miss you.”

Former Dynamos player Justice Majabvi said he was “at a loss for words.” Former Dynamos FC midfielder and FUZ Secretary-General Wonder Sithole expressed his sorrow, saying, “You could have said goodbye @NormanMaroto. May your soul rest in peace, my friend.”

After retiring from playing, Maroto became a football administrator and excelled as the Communications Manager at FUZ. He was dedicated to the welfare of players and the growth of football in Zimbabwe.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon. Maroto will be greatly missed by the football community and the entire nation.
