Dr. A.J.V. Maunganidze, Secretary for Health and Child Care, opened the meeting by thanking participants, including government representatives, healthcare providers, civil society organizations, private sector members, development partners, and citizens. He highlighted the significance of this consultative meeting in shaping a comprehensive and sustainable health insurance system.
“The objective is to engage in thorough discussions about the NHIS’s design, implementation, and sustainability,” Dr. Maunganidze stated. He emphasized that the success of the NHIS depends on the collective input and expertise of all involved parties.
The NHIS is envisioned to provide equitable, affordable, and high-quality healthcare, eliminating financial barriers to access. It aims to protect citizens from the high costs of medical expenses and ensure that everyone can receive the care they need.
Key principles guiding the NHIS include inclusivity and equity, quality and efficiency, transparency and accountability, and sustainability. Dr. Maunganidze underscored the importance of stakeholder feedback in creating a health insurance scheme that meets the needs of the population.
As the consultations progress, stakeholders are encouraged to share their insights and recommendations to help shape the NHIS. The initiative is seen as a crucial step toward a healthier Zimbabwe, where access to healthcare is a fundamental right for all.
The discussions at the Rainbow Towers are expected to lay the groundwork for a health insurance system that reflects the values and aspirations of the Zimbabwean people, moving the nation closer to achieving universal health coverage.
