President Mnangagwa Advocates for Stronger Korea-Africa Ties at Inaugural Summit

At the first Korea-Africa Summit held in Seoul, Zimbabwean President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa called for enhanced collaboration between Africa and South Korea to achieve shared growth and sustainability. The summit, themed “The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity,” brought together leaders from both regions, including South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ghazouani.

President Mnangagwa expressed his appreciation for South Korea’s hospitality and the successful organization of the summit. He noted that the event’s focus aligns closely with Zimbabwe’s national development goals, which aim for inclusive growth and improved living standards for all citizens.

Highlighting Zimbabwe’s commitment to international collaboration, Mnangagwa emphasized the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships. Despite facing longstanding sanctions from Western countries, Zimbabwe aims to utilize its natural resources, strategic location, and high literacy rates to drive modernization and industrialization.

“The Republic of Korea’s progress serves as an inspiration,” Mnangagwa stated, stressing the importance of adopting effective policies to uplift more Africans from poverty. He advocated for increased investment in African manufacturing, which he believes is essential for achieving economic solidarity and transformative growth.

Zimbabwe is open to partnerships and investments from South Korea, particularly in sectors such as agriculture and the value addition of minerals like lithium, iron, platinum, and gold. Mnangagwa also pointed to opportunities in agro-based manufacturing, tourism, and infrastructure development.

Amid growing concerns about climate change, Mnangagwa called for investments in green energy and power generation projects within Southern Africa. He praised the Korea-Rice Belt Initiative for its potential to enhance food production and security through technological innovation in agriculture.

“Zimbabwe has implemented agricultural reforms leading to self-sufficiency in wheat production,” Mnangagwa noted, while acknowledging the challenges posed by climate-induced droughts.

He also underscored the significance of strengthening cooperation in science, technology, and innovation between Korea and Africa, expressing optimism that the summit would lead to meaningful partnerships aligned with Africa’s development agenda.

The Korea-Africa Summit marks a significant step towards forging stronger economic and developmental ties between Korea and African nations, with a focus on shared growth and sustainability.
