Zimbabwe and Rwanda Strengthen Ties Through Successful Mid-Term Review

Harare, 28 May 2024 – Zimbabwe and Rwanda have reaffirmed their commitment to mutual cooperation following a productive mid-term review (MTR) of the Second Session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC). The meeting, held in Harare, saw high-level delegations from both nations evaluate progress and chart future initiatives.

Ambassador Albert R. Chimbindi, Zimbabwe’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and Ambassador James Musoni, Rwanda’s representative in Zimbabwe, co-chaired the meeting. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the JPCC’s second session.

Ambassador Chimbindi highlighted the successful implementation of numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across various sectors, including security, trade, tourism, and education. He praised the dedication of the teams involved and emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure the agreements translate into tangible benefits.

“The progress, especially in the exchange of educational personnel and expertise, stands out as a flagship initiative,” said Chimbindi. He urged the teams to maintain momentum through virtual follow-ups to avoid the costs associated with physical meetings.

Ambassador Musoni echoed these sentiments, celebrating the collaborative spirit that marked the discussions. He stressed the importance of turning agreements into actions that benefit both nations’ citizens. “We must commit to regular accountability to achieve the targets of our agreements,” he stated.

Both leaders emphasized the need for ongoing cooperation and accountability. They concluded the MTR with a renewed pledge to work together towards mutual goals, setting the stage for continued success in the Zimbabwe-Rwanda partnership.

As the delegations prepare to return to their respective countries, they carry with them a strengthened resolve to enhance bilateral relations, ensuring that the strategic partnership between Zimbabwe and Rwanda reaches new heights.
