Gvt, UN ramp up food aid appeal

The government of Zimbabwe, in collaboration with the United Nations, has initiated a major food aid appeal to address the severe food shortages caused by an El Niño-induced drought. The appeal, signed by Hon. D. Garwe, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, and the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator, aims to support the nearly nine million Zimbabweans currently facing food insecurity, including 35% of the urban population. This drought has significantly impacted the agricultural sector, with only 700,000 metric tons of maize harvested against an annual requirement of 2.2 million metric tons. Additionally, over 1.4 million cattle are at risk due to inadequate food and water supplies. In response, President Mnangagwa declared a State of Disaster across all ten provinces as of March 28, 2024.The comprehensive appeal estimates a need for $3.3 billion in aid to address the various sectors of the economy. An initial amount of approximately $31.9 million has been allocated, with plans to support vulnerable communities through various initiatives such as school feeding programs, food and cash for assets, irrigation development, and livelihood projects. The government also plans to promote agricultural mechanization and conservation agriculture, along with Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions. The government and the UN aim to ensure no one is left behind in their efforts to mitigate the effects of the drought and build resilience against future climate-induced hazards.
