The Director General of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), Dr. G. K. Machengete, gave an inspiring speech at the World Telecoms and Information Society Day celebrations held in Madziva. The event was attended by notable figures including the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Honourable Dr. Tatenda Mavetera, and other distinguished guests.
Dr. Machengete expressed excitement about the theme of the day, “Innovation for Sustainable Development.” He highlighted how recent innovations like Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are changing the world. For example, VR allows people to visit far-off places like museums in Amsterdam or the Eiffel Tower from the comfort of their homes. In education, VR can make learning more interactive and immersive.
AI is also making significant impacts. Dr. Machengete gave a humorous yet practical example of cars using AI to prevent drunk driving by refusing to start if the driver has consumed too much alcohol. He also mentioned Dubai’s use of robots as police officers to enhance airport security, showcasing how technology can improve public safety.
During the event, Dr. Machengete emphasized the importance of technology in daily life, comparing a world without it to a library without books. He expressed pride in the digital initiatives in Madziva, such as Community Information Centres (CICs) and computer labs, which are providing digital resources and training to the local community. These centers are not only places of learning but also catalysts for economic growth and community empowerment.
Dr. Machengete also addressed the darker sides of digital innovation, such as the potential moral and ethical challenges. He cited examples like AI-generated partners becoming preferred over real human relationships in some parts of the world and the misuse of AI in education. He assured the audience that POTRAZ, in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT, is working on regulations to manage AI’s impact in Zimbabwe.
In conclusion, Dr. Machengete called for continued investment in digital infrastructure and literacy to ensure that everyone benefits from technological advancements. He stressed the need for collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society to build a digitally inclusive and sustainable future.
