Progress in Justice and Rehabilitation Projects

Harare, Zimbabwe – The Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi, shared updates on various projects his Ministry is implementing. These initiatives aim to boost agricultural production, enhance inmate rehabilitation, and improve judicial infrastructure across the country.

At Hurungwe Prison Farm in Mashonaland West Province, the harvesting of 80 hectares of maize is currently underway. Similarly, at Mutimurefu Prison in Masvingo Province, the harvesting of 30 hectares of maize will start next week. Additionally, Anju Prison Farm in Matabeleland North Province has produced 1,700.15 metric tonnes of maize and 2 metric tonnes of sunflower from a 40-hectare farm equipped with drip and sprinkler irrigation.

In terms of rehabilitation programs, significant progress is being made. In Matabeleland North Province, 109 inmates are gaining valuable skills in operating machinery through the MacDonald Bricks Correctional Employment Programme. These inmates receive cash, groceries, and other supplies that benefit their families. Meanwhile, the Gogo Olive Correctional Programme in Manicaland Province is training inmates in knitting export-quality animal sets. So far, 60 inmates have been trained, with 8 currently in training. In Midlands Province, 10 inmates are learning to interpret plans, perform basic engineering works, and bricklay through the Building Brigade Correctional Programme. These skills were applied in constructing a classroom at Stanley Primary School.

Furthermore, the Ministry is making strides in improving judicial infrastructure. New court complexes are being built, with the Gwanda New Court Complex, Chiredzi, and Mutawatawa New Magistrates Courts at various stages of completion.

These projects highlight the Ministry’s efforts to improve agricultural output, provide inmates with useful skills for future employment, and enhance the justice system infrastructure in Zimbabwe.
