As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, under the stewardship of Honourable Dr Tatenda Mavetera, has been steadfast in its commitment to equipping Zimbabweans with the necessary digital skills for the 21st century.
With a focus on empowerment, the Ministry embarked on a mission to train 1,000 individuals in digital literacy. Through dedicated efforts, 1,000 people have already been equipped with these vital skills, with the remaining 200 soon to follow by May 15, 2024.
Simultaneously, the Ministry recognised the importance of digitisation in preserving and accessing critical records. Thus, a concerted effort was made to digitize 2,500 records, ensuring easy accessibility and safeguarding valuable information for future generations.
One of the pivotal projects under the Ministry’s purview is the development of the Government Applications Procurement Framework, a cornerstone in streamlining procurement processes and promoting efficiency. Progress on this front has been promising, with the framework slated for completion by May 15, 2024.
Education lies at the heart of national development, and the Ministry has been proactive in bridging the digital divide in schools. Through the deployment of ICT equipment, 40 marginalised schools have already received the necessary tools, with plans to extend this initiative to 60 more schools.
Disaster management is another area where technology plays a crucial role. Recognizing this, the Ministry established 14 ICT-enabled disaster management centres, enhancing the country’s preparedness and response capabilities in times of crisis.
The expansion of communication infrastructure across provinces has been a priority, with the deployment of 52 base stations aimed at improving connectivity and access to information. From Mashonaland East to Matabeleland North, these base stations serve as pillars of connectivity, bringing communities closer together.
In tandem with expanding infrastructure, the Ministry has been focused on enhancing access to internet services. The completion of projects such as the installation of a Wireless Radio Base Station in Masvingo and internet provision at Esigodini Agricultural College underscores the commitment to bridging the digital divide.
Furthermore, the Ministry’s efforts extend beyond infrastructure to education and rehabilitation. The establishment of an ICT and Vocational Training Centre at Marondera Female Open Prison signifies a commitment to equipping all sectors of society with the tools for success.
Recognising the importance of modernising traditional services, the Ministry completed the refurbishment of post offices in Tsanzaguru and Torwood, modernizing these vital community hubs.
Looking towards the future, the Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding connectivity. Site surveys for the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) project in Chitungwiza have been completed, marking a significant step towards enhancing internet access in urban areas.
Lastly, the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls-Kazungula Fibre Optic Backbone project stands as a testament to Zimbabwe’s commitment to embracing the digital age. With a targeted completion date of May 15, 2024, this project promises to revolutionise connectivity and propel the nation towards a brighter, digitally inclusive future.
