As one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Zimbabwe has experienced firsthand the devastating impacts of environmental stresses such as floods, cyclones, and droughts. These challenges have taken a toll on the education system, disrupting learning, undermining infrastructure, and jeopardizing the well-being of students and educators alike.

In response, the government, in partnership with UNESCO, has launched the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative (CSESI). This transformative initiative, supported by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), aims to integrate climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into the fabric of Zimbabwe’s education system.

Through CSESI, Zimbabwe is not only receiving invaluable technical support and capacity-building assistance from UNESCO but is also benefiting from collaborative efforts with 19 other countries worldwide. This global partnership underscores the shared commitment to building resilient education systems capable of weathering the impacts of climate change.

At the heart of this initiative lies a recent three-day workshop held in Harare, where stakeholders convened to strategize and chart a path forward. Participants engaged in lively discussions, sharing best practices and innovative ideas to inform climate change adaptation measures and policy interventions.

By harnessing the resources and expertise provided by UNESCO, Zimbabwe is empowering educators and students to become agents of change in the fight against climate change. Through education, the country is cultivating a generation of environmentally conscious citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills to build a sustainable future.

This collaborative approach to education exemplifies Zimbabwe’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. By integrating climate action into the education system, the nation is not only safeguarding its natural resources but also nurturing a culture of resilience and innovation that will endure for generations to come.

As Zimbabwe continues to forge ahead on this transformative journey, guided by the principles of partnership and progress, it is poised to emerge as a global leader in climate-resilient education and sustainable development.
