Ambassador Zhou Ding Elevates ICT Collaboration in Zimbabwe with Official Visit

“His Excellency Mr. Zhou Ding, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Zimbabwe, graced us with his presence today, engaging in a warm exchange with the Honorable Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Dr. T. A. Mavetera. Dr. Mavetera graciously welcomed Ambassador Zhou, recognizing China as a crucial ally in Zimbabwe’s ICT sector. China’s steadfast support accelerates Zimbabwe’s journey towards a comprehensive Digital Economy by 2030, bolstered by diverse initiatives.

A contingent of the Ministry’s staff has ventured to China, acquiring expertise in key areas such as software engineering and cybersecurity. Additionally, China’s provision of favorable loans is expediting the expansion of broadband and connectivity, exemplified by the National Mobile Broadband Phase 3 project, which promises the deployment of numerous 5G-enabled base stations across Zimbabwe.

Seizing the opportunity, Dr. Mavetera outlined various initiatives undertaken by the Ministry, including the Zimbabwe Technology Park, the digitalize Zimbabwe drive, and the development of a National AI policy. He stressed the importance of fostering ICT startups, envisioning the Zimbabwe Technology Park as the hub for nurturing Zimbabwe’s equivalent of Silicon Valley. Ambassador Zhou Ding reaffirmed his commitment to these endeavors, offering to facilitate discussions with Chinese companies eager to manufacture smart devices within Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe remains dedicated to its diplomatic principles, striving to be ‘a friend to all and an enemy to none.’”
