IoCDZ honours tax expert Simbarashe Hamudi

Baker Tilly Central Africa’s tax partner Simbarashe Hamudi has been listed in the prestigious Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe’s (ICDZ) 40 Most Influential Young Leaders in Zimbabwe.

Hamudi is an executive committee member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Tax Accountants (ZITA) and a member of the Africa Tax Administration Forum (ATAF).

Apart from that, Hamudi is a part-time tax lecturer at the Zimbabwe Institute of Tax Accountants and also contributes to tax policy formulation through the Baker Tilly Tax Seminars, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and the Ministry of Finance.

As a tax specialist with an extensive background working with accounting firms and revenue authorities, Hamudi rose through the ranks at ZIMRA before he moved to Tax Matrix where he was the Transfer Pricing Manager. He is the current Baker Tilly Regional Tax Partner responsible for Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and Zambia. Hamudi specialises in Transfer Pricing, Double Tax Agreements, Withholding Tax, VAT, Income Tax and International Tax.

Hamudi is a seasoned researcher. He has been researching with different international tax research institutes which include International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD), Committee on Fiscal Studies – Africa, Africa Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) and Africa Tax Research Network (ATRN).

In 2020 he published a tax paper on the taxation of the digital economy with the Committee of Fiscal Studies – Africa. He recently published another tax research paper in July 2021 with International Centre for Tax and Development on the perception of taxpayers on the introduction of Value-Added Withholding Tax.

Hamudi has been attending Africa Tax Research Network Congress Annual Congresses as a researcher since the 4th Annual Congress in 2018, where his research paper on Value Added Tax as a means of revenue generation in Zimbabwe was awarded the best research paper award in Cameroon.

In 2019, Hamudi was part of the Zimbabwe delegates at the 5th annual congress in Senegal where he presented a paper on the impact of remittance on tax revenue generation, and his paper was amongst the best for the second time in a roll.

At the 6th annual congress which was hosted by ATAF in partnership with Kenya Revenue Authority and Simbarashe presented a paper on the challenges of property tax collection in the digital economy.

Hamudi was also part of the ZIMRA team that attended the 7th annual centre meeting of the International Centre for Tax and Development in Kigali Rwanda in 2019 which was hosted in partnership with the Rwanda Revenue Authority. He was amongst the presenters, who deliberated on what’s next for tax research in Africa.

Simbarashe’s tax brilliance can be traced back to his days at the National University of Science and Technology where he graduated with a first-class Bachelor of Commerce Honours Degree in Fiscal Studies.

He also holds a Masters of Commerce Honours Degree in Accounting from Midlands State University (MSU), an Advance Diploma in International Tax (ADIT) from the Chartered Institute of Taxation (United Kingdom) and Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Taxation from the Institute of Certified Tax Accountants (ICTA). He is currently studying towards the Executive Masters in Business Administration.

Hamudi is a Registered Tax Accountant with the Public Accountants and Auditors Board (PAAB), an Associate of the Zimbabwe Institute of Tax Accountants (ZITA) and Institute of Certified Tax Accountants (ICTA) and an International Tax Affiliate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) United Kingdom.

Hamudi is currently working on a book titled “Transfer Pricing in Zimbabwe” that is expected to be published before the year-end.
