Government Slams Shurugwi Violence, Calls for Peaceful Resolution

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has strongly condemned the violent clashes between artisanal miners and mine security personnel at Wanderer Mine Site Number 4 in Shurugwi, Midlands Province, on 3 November 2026. The incident, which left two security personnel hospitalised and five excavators burnt, is a stark reminder of the need for peaceful resolution of disputes in the mining sector.

The Ministry has dispatched a team to investigate the incident, focusing on verifying mining rights, assessing compliance with regulations, and identifying parties responsible for the violence.

“Mining disputes must be resolved through established legal and administrative channels,” the statement reads.

The government says it will work with law enforcement agencies, the mine operator, artisanal miners, and local leadership to establish facts and take action against lawbreakers.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to promoting responsible mining, formalising artisanal miners, protecting lawful mining rights, and fostering peaceful coexistence between mining companies and communities. Updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
