ZANU PF Harare Province has adopted a raft of resolutions for consideration at the party’s 23rd National People’s Conference, including a call for the postponement of the congress and the continued leadership of President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa as party President and First Secretary.
The resolutions were adopted at an inter-district conference held in Harare as the province consolidated submissions from its grassroots structures ahead of the national conference scheduled for October in Chinhoyi.
ZANU PF Politburo member Senator Charles Tawengwa said the province had reached a collective position on the congress question, stressing that the resolutions reflected the views of the province rather than individual positions.
“We agreed that our party congress must be postponed and when we hold our congress, the President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa must continue as the president and first secretary of the party,” Senator Tawengwa said.
The resolutions were developed through consultations at zone level before being consolidated at provincial level, with the province indicating that the final submissions would be forwarded to the ZANU PF national leadership for consideration at the conference.
Harare Provincial Chairperson Cde Godwills Masimirembwa said the province had also resolved that the party’s constitution should be aligned with recent changes to the national constitutional framework.
“We said the party must align its constitution with the country’s constitution following some legislative amendments that include a seven-year electoral cycle,” Cde Masimirembwa said.
The province further placed social and economic concerns among its priorities, with resolutions addressing social amenities, poverty eradication, the state of the economy and the provision of social services.
Provincial Secretary for Administration Cde Jinjika said thematic committees had been tasked with interrogating the major issues affecting both the party and the country before the resolutions were consolidated.
The thematic areas included the state of the party, the state of the economy, the state of social services and poverty eradication, as well as engagement and re-engagement.
Drug and substance abuse was also identified as one of the issues requiring attention as the province develops its submissions to the national conference.
The inter-district conference was attended by Central Committee members, national members and provincial leadership, with officials emphasising that resolutions remain a key mechanism through which the party aggregates views from its structures.
Senator Tawengwa urged party members to remain focused on the country’s Vision 2030 agenda, while also challenging young people to take advantage of national programmes, including the National Youth Service.
ZANU PF Deputy National Security Politburo member Cde Chirau said Harare held particular significance in the history of the ruling party, describing the capital as part of the genesis of ZANU PF.
The resolutions will now proceed through the party’s provincial structures before being submitted to ZANU PF headquarters for consideration at the 23rd National People’s Conference.
The conference is expected to bring together resolutions from provinces across the country for consideration and adoption by the party’s national structures.
