Zimbabwean football has been handed a major boost after the National Sports Stadium officially secured CAF Category 3 approval, clearing the way for the country to once again host international football on home soil.
The approval is more than a stadium milestone. It is the return of the Warriors to their home, their supporters and the roar of a nation behind them.
For years, Zimbabwean football supporters have been forced to watch the Warriors play their so-called home matches away from home. That chapter has now moved closer to an end, with the National Sports Stadium once again cleared to host international football.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) welcomed the CAF approval, describing it as a significant milestone that brings international football back to Zimbabwe.
The development follows the rehabilitation of the National Sports Stadium, with ZIFA acknowledging the commitment and leadership of President Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and the Government of Zimbabwe in the process.
ZIFA also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Hon. Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Ambassador Anselem Sanyatwe, Permanent Secretary Mr Nicholas Moyo, the Sports and Recreation Commission, sponsors and partners who contributed to the rehabilitation programme. CAF and FIFA were also recognised for their technical guidance and support.
For the Warriors, the significance is immense.
International football is not simply returning to a venue. It is returning to the people who fill the stands, wave the national flag and sing for Zimbabwe. 🇿🇼
The National Sports Stadium can once again become the stage for Zimbabwe’s biggest football moments, with supporters set to have the opportunity to watch their national team compete on home soil.
ZIFA said restoring an approved international football venue was one of the key priorities set by its Executive Committee at the beginning of its tenure, adding that while the CAF approval is a major step, work must continue to maintain and further improve the facility.
The association is now looking forward to welcoming Zimbabwe back to the National Sports Stadium for the Warriors’ next home international assignment.
