Zimbabwean music icon Alick Macheso and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo Band has pulled out of this year’s Silala Festival in South Africa, citing escalating security challenges and unrest affecting foreign nationals in the country.
The Silala Music Festival is taking place on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The event is being hosted at Harmony Park in Vyeboom, South Africa.

Book NowIn an official statement released to fans and organizers, Macheso’s team said the decision was made with “great regret” after monitoring the current situation on the ground.
“We are unable to participate in this year’s Silala Festival,” the statement read. “This decision has been necessitated by the current security situation, protests, and unrest affecting foreign nationals in South Africa, circumstances which are entirely beyond our control.”
The band emphasized that all contractual and logistical arrangements for the performance had already been finalized and they were fully prepared to travel. However, the safety and well-being of the musicians, crew, and fans was prioritized above all else.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to the festival organizers and to all our supporters who were looking forward to seeing us perform,” the statement continued. “We remain committed to joining you in the future once conditions improve and normality returns.”
Macheso’s management also used the moment to call for calm and unity during a tense period.
“We encourage everyone to promote peace, unity, tolerance, and mutual respect during these challenging times. Music transcends borders, and together we can build stronger and more inclusive communities.”
The withdrawal comes amid reported protests and xenophobic incidents in parts of South Africa targeting foreign nationals, which have prompted several regional artists and promoters to reassess travel plans.
Known for his energetic sungura performances and devoted following across Southern Africa, Macheso has performed to packed audiences in South Africa in previous years. Fans who had anticipated his set at Silala expressed disappointment online but largely backed the decision, citing safety as paramount.
