Highlanders condemns violence

Highlanders Football Club has strongly condemned the violence that reared its ugly head during the match with Dynamos Football club at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.

The club issued a statement today.

“Highlanders Football Club is deeply saddened by the crowd trouble that led to the abandonment of our league match against Dynamos FC at Barboufields (BF) stadium on Sunday.

The club condemns the unsporting behaviour that negatively profiles Zimbabwean football as a brand”, read the statement.

The club bemoaned the ugly scenes witnessed at BF. During the Covid-19 pandemic, supporters were banned from attending matches resulting in clubs playing in empty stadiums. The ban was lifted following massive engagements with authorities. The violence does not augur well for the game.

It tarnishes the image of our league.

The club apologised to the nation.

“We would like to apologise to all our stakeholders, particularly our sponsers, partners and innocent football loving fans who were affected by acts of a few selfish individuals who care less about the growth of their clubs and football in general. We also pray for those who were injured and wish them a speedy recovery”, read the statement.

The club called upon stakeholders to work together to find a lasting solution to eradicate violence at football matches.

Crowd trouble started when Dynamos was leading by two goals. Highlanders supporters stormed the pitch leading to the abandonment of the game.
