Zimbabwe Gains Seat on Africa AI Council with Minister Mavetera’s Appointment

Zimbabwe has strengthened its position as a digital leader in Africa with the appointment of Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, Minister of Information Communication Technology, to the Africa Artificial Intelligence Council under the Smart Africa initiative.

Minister Mavetera’s appointment comes on the heels of Cabinet’s approval of Zimbabwe’s National AI Strategy in November 2025, demonstrating the country’s commitment to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence for socio-economic development.

The Africa AI Council, chaired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, is a prestigious body tasked with guiding AI development across the continent. Minister Mavetera will join a select group of leaders shaping Africa’s AI future, focusing on key areas such as infrastructure, data, talent, investment, markets, and governance.

The appointment is expected to enhance Zimbabwe’s digital growth, promote inclusive and sovereign development, and position the country as a key player in Africa’s AI landscape. The Smart Africa initiative aims to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation, and Minister Mavetera’s role on the Council will be instrumental in driving this agenda forward.

This development underscores Zimbabwe’s progress in embracing technology and innovation, and its commitment to leveraging digital opportunities for the benefit of its citizens.
