Breaking News: Sungura Music Loses a Legend: Nicholas Zakaria, ‘Senior Lecturer’, Passes Away

The music world is mourning the loss of Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, affectionately known as “Senior Lecturer”, a renowned sungura music icon who has passed away aged 69 after a long battle with illness.

The iconic musician had been struggling with swollen legs, high blood pressure, and diabetes, conditions that had left him unable to perform – his primary source of income. His passing was confirmed in a Facebook post by the family.

Nicholas Zakaria’s music had a profound impact on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Born on April 5, 1956, he started his journey in 1975 and released his first song, “Chikumbiro”, in 1993.

He formed his band, The Green Mangoes, at age fourteen and later co-founded Vhuka Boys and Khiama Boys, achieving significant popularity in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa during the 1980s and 1990s.

Some of his hit songs include; Mabvi Namagokora 2002, Ruregerero 2002, Zomvelamvela 2005, Ndingaite Sei? 2014, Tsika Dzedu 2014, Mashoko Ako 2012 among others.

As a beloved member of the community, Nicholas will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His dedication to his craft and his inspiring voice have left an indelible mark on the music world.
