Harare, September 9, 2025 — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has officially launched Zimbabwe’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2027-2028, signalling the country’s intent to play a more active role in global peace and security.
During the launch in Harare, the President framed the bid as a mission not just for Zimbabwe, but for the African continent and the developing world, under the theme: “Advancing 21st Century Solutions for Global Peace and Security through Multilateralism.”
“Zimbabwe’s commitment to peace is unshakeable,” President Mnangagwa said. “We recognise that peace is the cornerstone of sustainable socio-economic development and stand ready to contribute our experience and leadership to the mission of the Security Council.”
If elected, Zimbabwe will focus on initiatives including silencing guns in Africa, countering terrorism, combating organised crime, and addressing climate-induced security threats, while promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes and supporting sustainable development initiatives.
The launch has already received endorsement from SADC and AU member states, reflecting regional confidence in Zimbabwe’s diplomatic capacity and its experience in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
Analysts note that the bid underscores Zimbabwe’s strategic approach to global diplomacy, blending historical credibility with proactive engagement to influence international peace and security agendas. By advocating for multilateral solutions and African-led initiatives, the country positions itself as a trustworthy partner on the global stage.
The campaign, set to culminate in elections scheduled for June 2026, signals Zimbabwe’s ambition to contribute not only to continental stability but also to broader efforts for justice, equality, and sustainable development worldwide.
