Fitness Campaign Takes Center Stage in Fight Against Drug Abuse

Efforts to combat drug and substance abuse continue to intensify, with various stakeholders calling for collective action to address the crisis.

In a bid to raise awareness, the Fitness Against Drug Abuse campaign is set to take place in Harare on March 28 and 29, using sports and fitness activities as tools for promoting a drug-free lifestyle. The event will feature a range of activities, including a 3km fun run, aerobics, boxing, Zumba, and entertainment, encouraging people to embrace healthier alternatives to substance abuse.

Founder of the initiative, Mr. Lycan White, emphasized the power of sports in reaching and engaging communities.

“Sports transcend age, race, and culture, making them an effective way to connect with people. When individuals participate in sports, they feel more confident, open, and engaged.

This initiative is not just for those battling addiction but also for families, communities, and anyone seeking solutions or support,” he explained.

Since its launch, the campaign has gained widespread support, encouraging many to prioritize their health and well-being.

However, Mr. White acknowledged that more needs to be done.

“The response has been overwhelming, but we still feel there is a gap. Many individuals, whether struggling with addiction or being influenced by peers, are seeking help but don’t know where to turn. That’s why we are expanding our reach this year,” he said.

The rise in drug abuse, particularly among young people, has become a major concern, with substances such as crystal meth, broncleer, heroin, and even used diapers being commonly abused.

In response, the government has taken a firm stance by implementing strict measures to curb drug trafficking and use.

An Inter-ministerial Committee has been established to lead the nationwide fight against this growing menace.
