RAINFALL-INDUCED DISASTERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

The Government of Zimbabwe is deeply concerned about the widespread destruction caused by recent heavy rains, which have severely affected critical infrastructure, including schools, health facilities, homes, roads, and bridges. Tragically, these disasters have also claimed lives due to drowning, lightning strikes, and mining accidents.

While some regions have borne the brunt of the devastation, all areas are experiencing the impacts of flooding. The Department of Civil Protection, in collaboration with the ZRP Sub Aqua Unit and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, is actively conducting search and rescue operations. Communities are urged to remain vigilant and act as first responders where possible.

With forecasts indicating continued heavy rainfall, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works advises all citizens, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to take necessary precautions. This includes relocating to safer areas, avoiding open spaces during storms, refraining from crossing flooded rivers, and staying informed through reliable weather updates. Artisanal miners are strongly urged to suspend operations until conditions improve to prevent further tragedies.

The Government, through the National Multi-Hazard Contingent Plan, is mobilizing resources to strengthen disaster response and recovery efforts.
