SADC, COMESA Rally Behind Dr. Maimbo for AfDB Presidency

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) have thrown their support behind Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The endorsement, led by SADC Chairperson President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was made on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. President Mnangagwa underscored the strategic importance of AfDB in fostering economic resilience across Africa, particularly in addressing climate change, strengthening food security, and advancing infrastructure development.

He emphasized that Dr. Maimbo’s financial expertise and deep understanding of Africa’s economic landscape make him a strong candidate to steer the institution towards impactful reforms.

COMESA Secretary-General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, speaking on behalf of the regional bloc’s chairperson, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, confirmed their collective support for Dr. Maimbo’s bid. Dr. Maimbo, a seasoned financial strategist, outlined his vision for an AfDB that prioritizes efficiency, intra-Africa trade, and investments in key sectors like agriculture.

His candidacy has also received backing from Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who noted that the endorsements from SADC and COMESA position Dr. Maimbo as a leading contender in the race.

The AfDB presidency is being contested by eight candidates from various African nations, including Chad, Algeria, and Senegal. The winner will succeed Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has led the bank for the past decade.
