Govt sets age limit at 30 for commuter omnibus drivers

The government has set the age limit at 30 for commuter omnibus drivers.

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Hon Felix Mhona notified the nation through the Road Traffic (Licensingof Drivers) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 (No. 1). The amendment is in terms of section 81 of the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11].

Public service vehicles (omnibus or commuter omnibus) drivers must have experience of not less than five years and age of not less than 30 years according to the new regulations.

The Minister has waived these provisions to accommodate drivers who are between 25 and 30 years and were already authorised to drive an omnibus or commuter omnibus before the publication of the new regulations.

The new age limit takes into account the fact that drivers above thirty years are mature, responsible and cautious on the country’s roads.
