The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will convene an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on January 30, 2025, in Harare, Zimbabwe, to discuss the security situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The Summit will be chaired by His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of SADC. This meeting follows the outcome of the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Organ Troika, plus the DRC and Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) to the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), which took place on January 28, 2025, and was chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation.
Prior to the summit, the SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials and the SADC Council of Ministers will meet to lay the groundwork for the discussions. The Summit will focus on addressing the ongoing conflict in the eastern DRC and finding solutions to ensure peace and stability in the region.
The SADC Extraordinary Summit is expected to reaffirm the organization’s commitment to supporting the DRC and ensuring regional security and cooperation.
